Meet Alan

About Alan Kyerematen

Hon. Alan Kyerematen is the immediate past Minister for Trade and Industry of the Republic of Ghana. He was appointed in January 2017 by President Akufo-Addo and he resigned honourably after six years of service to the country. Mr. Kyerematen had previously served in a similar capacity as Minister for Trade, Industry and President Special Initiatives (PSI) under former President John Agyekum Kufour, between 2003 and 2007. Prior to that he served as Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States from 2001 to 2003.

Alan has had an extensive and distinguished record in international trade, public policy, enterprise development, politics, diplomacy and law. He was a Senior Trade Policy Advisor for the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. He was also Regional Director for UNDP’s flagship programme for enterprise development in Africa, Enterprise Africa, establishing Enterprise Support Programmes in 13 African countries.

Father: Alexander Atta Yaw Kyerematen from Pataase, Kumasi and Bompata in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He was a Social Anthropologist. Mr. Alex Kyerematen was a Town Clerk of the Kumasi Municipal Council and a former Mayor of Kumasi and Commissioner for Local Government from 1966 to 1969. He was the founder and first director of the Ghana National Cultural Centre in Kumasi.

Mother: Victoria Ama Amissah Kyerematen (née Welsing) was from Elmina and Ejisu. She was an Educationist.

Wife: : Mrs. Patricia Christabel Abena Adutwumwaa Kyerematen (née Kingsley-Nyinah). She hails from Abetifi, Kwahu, Eastern Region of Ghana. She was Marketing Executive, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Hospitality Executive, Villa Victoria Executive Guest House.

2017-2022 One District One Factory (1D1F) Initiative

  • A total of 296 projects are at various stages of implementation, out of which 126 companies are currently in operation and 143 are under construction whilst 27 1D1F projects have been earmarked for financial support by Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs).
  • A total number of 160,823 employment opportunities have been created including 23,203 direct jobs across the country.
  • An amount of GH¢ 589 million Import Duty Exemptions on Capital Goods and Raw Materials was granted for 37 companies under the initiative.
  • About GH¢ 2.69 billion has been granted by PFIs as loans to finance 1D1F Projects/Companies.
  • GH¢ 269 million has been disbursed by government as Interest Subsidy Payment Support to de-risk PFI loans to 1D1F Companies.

Automobile Manufacturing:

  • Four (4) global brands are currently assembling vehicles under the Ghana Automotive Development Programme: Volkswagen (VW), Toyota, Nissan, Peugeot
  • Ghana’s own Kantanka Automobile Limited.
  • Trial production of Changan Hunter Pickup is ongoing
  • Assembling of Hyundai SUV models namely Creta, Tucson, Santafe and Palisade has commenced.
  • Other two (2) additional assembly plants are under construction to produce Isuzu and KIA brands of vehicles. The Toyota assembly plant which commenced commercial production of vehicles in 2021 will start assembling Suzuki vehicles.
  • This significant increase in assemblers will broaden the choice of made-in-Ghana vehicles to 11 brands of automobiles by the end of the year.

Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing:

  • One (1) large scale state-of-the-art WHO GMP Certified manufacturing plant is currently operational. Additional WHO GMP certified manufacturing plant is near completion.
  • Ten (10) large and medium scale pharmaceutical manufacturers are currently expanding productive capacity with financial support from PFIs under the Ministry of Trade and Industry’s Industrial Transformation Agenda.

SME Development :

  • 37 Business Resource Centers (BRCs) are currently operational in 37 Districts providing business development services to MSMEs including 1D1F Companies. 30 additional BRCs have been constructed in 30 districts awaiting operationalization.
  • 21 Technology Solution Centers (TCSs) are currently in operation in 21 districts, providing technology support services to MSMEs whiles 5 new (TSCs) are to be operationalized before the end of the year.
  • Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) was launched with enhanced institutional capacity to support MSMEs. This replaced the former National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI).
  • An amount of Ghs520 million has been disbursed by Ghana Enterprises Agency (formerly, NBSSI) to more than 300,000 MSMEs nationwide under the CAPBuss scheme.
  • 8,160 Start-up Kits distributed to 8,160 Apprentices and Artisans by GEA across the country.

African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA):

  • Ghana won the bid to host the AfCFTA Secretariat in Accra in a keenly contested race.
  • A National AfCFTA Coordinating Office has been established to support private sector operators in Ghana to take full advantage of the AfCFTA Agreement.
  • National AfCFTA Policy Framework and Action Plan for Boosting Ghana’s Trade with Africa has been launched.

Industrial Parks & Special Economic Zones :

  • Site Assessments for all Industrial Parks and SEZs in Ghana has been completed.
  • Preparatory works to establish the flagship 5,000-acre Greater Kumasi Industrial City and Special Economic Zone has reached advance stage.
  • Funding for the construction of Off-site public infrastructure for the Greater Kumasi Industrial City project has been secured from the World Bank.
